Enabling a Just Transition in South Africa

South Africa faces significant challenges from different perspectives, including socio- economic issues, environmental degradation and climate related risks.  Therefore, it is an imperative that the energy transition is conducted in a just and equitable manner which is centred around ‘people, planet and prosperity’. It is also important that the climate crisis is not only addressed from an environmental perspective, but as a broader and multifaceted issue with significant implications for energy systems, the economy, livelihoods, health and safety, job security and justice (systematic approach to the Just Energy Transition).

Enabling a Just Transition in SA requires the effective transformation and decarbonisation of the energy sector through clean energy technologies such as renewable energy. An intentional and integrated approach to social dialogue, skills development, reskilling, upskilling and the creation of quality jobs in low carbon sectors should also be factored in. Furthermore, addressing the physical and transitional risks of climate change, increasing climate adaptation and resilience efforts, ensuring energy security, boosting economic growth and mobilising funding through SA’ Just Energy Transition Investment Plan will also contribute to a Just Energy Transition.

Policy development and implementation are also key considerations that will enable the achievement of SA’s Just Energy Transition objectives. Policies provide guidance on how the transition will be achieved for the prevention of negative socio-economic impacts, especially in vulnerable regions such as the Mpumalanga Province.

It is envisaged that through the guidance of the Presidential Climate Commission and the actions of other key stakeholders such as business, communities, social partners and funders, the country will shift to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy and progress towards the achievement of its Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement.
